2022 Central Carolina Archery Association Rules

Note: New changes for 2022 in red letters

The CENTRAL CAROLINA ARCHERY ASSOCIATION endeavors to promote archery, with an emphasis on bow hunting, by providing educational programs, tournament competitions, and other assistance to any club or organization involved in archery and related fields.

The CENTRAL CAROLINA ARCHERY ASSOCIATION, hereafter known as the CCAA, consists of the following member clubs:

CLUB ASSOCIATIONS

  • Gooch's Mill Archery Club
  • Quewhiffle Creek Bowhunters
  • Neuse River Bowhunters
  • Tar River Archery Club

The CCAA will set the 3-D shooting schedule for the upcoming year by the week of January 1. The CCAA will hold at least one annual meeting, the time and place to be determined by the current CCAA President

  • Meeting called to order: welcome members
  • Welcome new clubs
  • Identify two members from each club as designated club representatives, with speaking and voting privileges for this meeting
  • Old Business
  • Induction of Associate Clubs, as needed
  • Open floor to new business, including:
  • Election of new CCAA President
  • Installation of new CCAA President
  • Discussion of tournament rules
  • Selection of dates for Open Tournaments
  • Update of club information (Names, Addresses and Phone numbers of all officers of each club)
  • Adjourn meeting

The annual meeting will be an open meeting. In the interest of order and function, each club will designate two club members to represent, speak, and vote for their club's interests. These two club representatives will be the only club members recognized by the CCAA President for speaking and voting.

The CCAA's Board of Directors will consist of the CCAA President, and of the President of all CCAA member clubs. A member club's president may designate another member of the president's club as their club representative if needed.

Election of a new CCAA President will be by nomination and majority vote of the members of the Board of Directors. The new CCAA President will take office immediately after being elected. Term of office for the President will be one year, or until the next annual CCAA meeting.

Any situation that needs to be addressed between the annual meetings of the CCAA will be decided by no less than 3 members (or their representatives) of the Board of Directors. All such decisions shall be reported to the CCAA President promptly.

Member clubs of the CCAA are encouraged to attend and support the tournaments of fellow CCAA members clubs.

Each member club must keep a record of CCAA member participation that will be used at the annual CCAA meeting to record member participation of CCAA clubs.

All new clubs will be considered associate clubs. They will be on a one-year probation, and must abide by all CCAA rules. At the next annual CCAA meeting, the existing member clubs will vote on whether or not to keep the associate club.

If there are any problems, such as safety, not following tournament rules, lack of participation, and so on, with a member club, at least three of the members of the Board of Directors must address this problem and report it to the CCAA President as soon as possible. The member club will be issued a warning, and must address and correct the problem promptly. If the problem is not corrected promptly, the CCAA President must call a meeting within two weeks of the incident, and the Board of Directors present at the meeting will have a majority vote on whether or not to drop the affected club with the problem.

The following Tournament Rules will be in effect at all CCAA tournaments. A copy of these Tournament Rules will be posted at all registration booths.

GENERAL RULES

No broad heads are allowed on the range during the tournaments, unless specified for the competition.

Each participating CCAA member club and associate member club will be required to have a chronograph on site for all CCAA sanctioned tournaments. In case of chronograph failure, if no backup is available, speed checks will be dispensed with for that day.

Host club has the authority to divide groups as necessary. There will be a penalty if the group chooses not to divide. That penalty will stipulate that if the shoot is a point shoot, the scores of the shooters in that group will not count towards Shooter-of-the-Year. The club’s President/Vice-President will notify the score keeper of the situation.

Archers will shoot in groups of not less than 3, or more than 5 including children but must consist of 2 adults, to turn in an official score. The host has the right to add a shooter to your group at anytime. It may be necessary for the host club to send a member or members to meet the minimum number of 3. The exception to this is a group of traditional archers. They must have a minimum of 3, but the maximum is at the discretion of the host club. The host club will provide at least one range official to ensure rules are adhered to; association President and Vice President have agreed to be available to assist with this should the host club need help. This rule must be enforced.

Archers will be responsible for their own scorecards. Each shooter will receive two scorecards. There will be two score‑keepers in each group. Both scorecards must agree or archer will receive lower score.

Money will be returned at host clubs discretion for non‑finishers; i.e.: equipment failure, emergencies, etc.

Fourteen-ring or twelve-ring locations will be posted at each shooting station.

Length of sights, stabilizers, and V bars is at the discretion of the archer except in hunter classes, traditional classes and bare bow.

No laser‑aided (projected) sighting devices may be used.

Binoculars will be allowed, but may be checked by the host club for marks.

Rangefinders are only allowed on the range for Known Distance shooters. Distances may not be discussed with a Known Shooter at any time while on the course.

No littering will be allowed.

There will be a two-minute time limit for executing your shot once you reach your designated stake. Explanation: when an archer on the stake releases his or her shot, the next archer's two-minute time limit begins once they reach their designated stake. Archers must move away from the stake or shooting lane after releasing the shot in order for the next archer to take position at the stake. Archers cannot "glass" shoot at the stake after releasing the shot. Continued abuse will result in the shooter receiving an "x" on that target. This rule must be enforced.

Unsportsman‑like conduct, profanity, and/or unsafe conduct will not be allowed. Any physical altercation may result in the immediate expulsion from the CCAA for 1 year. No consumption of alcoholic beverages on host club property will be allowed.

Casual shoots to begin and end at times based on tournament schedules. All shooters must be waiting at stake #1 within 15 minutes after the registration cut-off time in order to shoot the tournament.

Payment of registration fees will constitute agreement that you understand and will abide by all Tournament Rules.

Any violation of these Tournament Rules will be grounds for ejection from the tournament and forfeiture of paid fees. A second Tournament Rules violation within the same calendar year will result in ineligibility for participation in any CCAA tournament for the remainder of that calendar year.

Between start and end time, no archer should be on the range unless one of the following applies: they have already shot the round and are helping with the tournament, are presently shooting or are functioning as a range official.

SHOOTING RULES

  1. Targets will be set at unmarked yardages, up to a maximum as designated by color of shooting stake. No Target May Be Set That Is More Than 3% Past The Maximum Distance. If safety permits, 50% of the Orange stakes will be set at 36 yards or above. All scoring rings on each target must be visible from any stake, with no trash in front of the targets. Extreme angles, which would cause glance-offs, will not be permitted. No targets will be set to cause the shooter to have to shoot across walking paths.
  2. Shooters must touch the stake with some part of their body when shooting.
  3. The archer's draw must be a controlled draw. No extreme movements are to be exhibited to come to full draw.
  4. Maximum arrow speed of 290 fps with exception of Youth Classes, which is 240 fps. There will be a 3% margin of error allowed for differences in chronographs. Every archer's arrow speed will be checked at some point during the tournament at the host club's discretion. The speed will be documented on his/her scorecard (exception: Cubs, Jr. Cubs, Traditional). Each host club reserves the right to check arrow speed at any time during the tournament. Host club will have discretion over which arrow archer shoots through chronograph.
  5. Once a shooter starts shooting a side or a round, he/she must finish with his/her group. In the event of equipment failure (equipment failure must be visible), after repairs are completed, an archer will complete any unshot targets with a group of not less than three people or a range official. The archer will have a 45-minute time limit to make repairs and test equipment.
  6. These classes were established with the "bow hunter" in mind and to encourage the “bow hunter" to participate in tournaments.
    • Bowhunter Novice Class Rules
    • Maximum 15” stabilizer (Back bars will be allowed)
    • No magnifying lenses
    • A shooter may use any sight as long as it does not extend no more than 6” from the front of the bow’s riser.
    • Maximum arrow speed of 290 fps
    • No arrow larger than a 23 series size (Easton Fatboy, Blackeagle Challenger)
    • Screw in points only
    • Hunter Pro Class Rules
    • Maximum 15" stabilizer (V-Bar type stabilizers are allowed)
    • Magnifying lenses may not be used
    • A shooter may use any sight as long as it does not extend no more than 6” from the front of the bow’s riser.
    • Maximum Arrow Speed of 290 fps
    • Screw in points or nibs are allowed.
    • Any size arrow is allow.
  7. Crossbows must be in sound working condition with a functioning safety and maintained in compliance with the manufacturer’s specifications. No replacement or alteration of a manufacturer’s trigger assembly or safety mechanism shall be allowed. Scopes up to 6x power may be used and may be equipped with lines or mill dots, but no light or image may be projected and there may be no range finding capability. Except as may be required due to an approved medical exemption, crossbows may only be shot in a standing position and the use of any device or outside agency including quivers, brackets, slings, hooked butt-plates, palm rests, stabilizer bars, rails, supports, prop stick(s) or any device that adds weight or allows the mass weight of the bow to be relieved from either arm or to steady the bow is prohibited; unless specified next.  Use of a manufacturer’s cocking/cranking device, one level, and one manufacture’s stirrup, weight(s) no larger than 2” in diameter and no more than 4” in combined totaled length and one set of limb vibration dampening devices shall be permitted if safely attached and not affecting the safe functioning of the crossbow.  If a cocking/cranking device is attached to the bow, it must be utilized as the method of cocking the crossbow. Use of the forward elbow against the ribcage or side is permitted. Bolts/arrows must be identical in size and weight with a minimum of three (3) vanes with a maximum outer diameter of .366”/9.3mm. Crossbows may only be cocked and loaded while the shooter is at the stake, and while loaded it must remain pointed down range always. A let down with a crossbow is any position which allows the shooter to relieve weight of the crossbow in a resting position.
  8. Ties will be a shoot-off for first place in all classes. The procedure for the shoot-off at all clubs will be as follows. A coin toss will determine which competitor shoots first. Both archers will be given an opportunity to view the target. (This target will have not been shot by either competitor.) The first competitor shoots. His/her arrow is scored, pulled and recorded, but not announced to the crowd or the other competitor. The next archer shoots and his/her arrow are scored. At that point the archer with the highest score wins. If tied after the first shot, the process will be repeated, alternating first shots until a winner is determined. If both archers are not present at the time of shoot-off, the winner will be determined by the number of 12’s they shot in the tournament. If 14’s are used in scoring they will count as 12’s for the purpose of breaking ties. Then 10’s, 8’s and 5’s. If 10's, 8's and 5's are tied, then we will go to the first dropped point on scorecards to determine the winner.
  9. Once a shooter comes to full draw and needs to 'let down,' he/she must acknowledge verbally "let down." He/she may not adjust sights after a "let down." If an archer has an inadvertent release of an arrow or equipment failure prior to coming to full draw, upon agreement of the group, the person may be allowed to re‑shoot.
  10. All distances to targets will be judged by the "naked eye”. No equipment, including but not limited to, sights, binoculars, or spotting scopes will be used in a manner inconsistent with this prohibition. The use of the "gapping techniques" which uses any of the shooters equipment and/or body parts is prohibited in determining yardages. Penalty: The first offense upheld by the CCAA Board of Directors will result in a warning to the shooter and a second offense will result in an "x" for that target.
  11. Maximum arrow speed in All Youth Classes will be 240 f.p.s. with 3% error margin.

SCORING RULES

  1. Scoring will be 12, l0, 8, 5 or X. 14’s may be used at the host club’s discretion. Upper 12’s may be called before the shot is made. All shooters in your group must be notified that you are shooting the upper 12. Once an upper 12 is called all other 12’s are no longer in play.
  2. No arrows are to be touched or removed from a target before scoring of all arrows in the target is completed. Arrows pulled early will be scored an "X" or "zero." Exception: Arrows may be pulled one at a time at the archers’ discretion, after it has been scored, for safety reasons, i.e. if the target is 5 yards or less.
  3. All arrows touching or cutting lines will be scored to the higher points. All arrows must be stuck in the target, except for pass‑throughs. Exceptions: Jr. Cubs' class. Arrows passing through the face, but still in the target, will be pushed back and scored. Due to the high number of arrows that may be shot at a target during an event, a "pass‑through" may occur. If the group agrees and confirms that a "pass‑through" occurred, the shooter will be allowed to take the score where the "pass‑through" occurred up to a maximum score of 10 points. A score of 12 points will not be permitted under this rule.
  4. Any arrow deflected (making contact, but still proceeding toward the target) by an arrow already in the target will be scored as it lies.
  5. Any arrow embedded (A "Robin Hood") in the nock of another arrow will be scored the same as the arrow it struck. (This generally applies to hollow aluminum arrows.)
  6. Any arrow rebounded (A "Robin Hood" that strikes and damages another arrow and does not proceed toward the target but bounces back) will be scored the same as the arrow it struck, provided the damaged arrow can be identified. (This generally applies to carbon and small diameter arrows.)
  7. No portable stands will be allowed to be used to hold targets up, unless they are anchored, so that the target cannot move. If the target moves during competition, it will be disqualified from the tournament.
  8. Any target declared as illegal by the Board of Directors will be scored as a zero on every scorecard for the class it affects in that tournament.
  9. No scores will be posted until the last group has reached target #11, or 2:00 PM, whichever comes first.
  10. All shooters and scorekeepers (if not a shooter) must walk to the target to score arrows unless the shooter is physically unable to walk to the target.
